Dorm decor: Men need to have spots for video games
Guys at Dixie State College decorate with simplicity, sticking to the bare essentials for making a home comfortable and not over the top.
The perfect bachelor pad starts at the front door, said Dustin Campbell, a psychology major from Santa Clara.
"The first thing girls are going to see is the front room," Campbell said. "Guys need to make a good first impression. There needs to be the right stuff in the front room like a nice couch and television set where the moves can be made."
Style is an important part of any bachelor pad. Colors and accessories need to be symmetrical.
"It needs to be simple and classy," said Seth Weinheimer, a sophomore business major from Ivins. "No tacky stuff. The bathroom is extremely important as ventilation is the key."
It's vital to maintain cleanliness in a male dorm. Guys just need to clean up and stock up on alcohol, said Aaron Camis, a sophomore business major from Cheyenne, Wyo.
Weinheimer said every bachelor pad will need the right accessories and furniture. Guys will need both an Xbox 360 and a PS3. He said both systems will provide for every multimedia need.
"You need a great multimedia device," Weinheimer said. "With a PS3 you need the Blu-ray. At the same time though, you've got to play 'Halo' and the Xbox 360 as 'Xbox Live' is superior for online play. Also keep it simple with just nice, black couches."
Every room in a man's place will need to be loaded with the appropriate tools and utensils.
"The kitchen has got to be A fully equipped," Weinheimer said. "You need plenty of counter space and definitely four burners on the stove. You don't want a lot of stuff. You don't want to have 10 to 12 crappy plates, but what you want is six nice plates. That way while you're eating, the dishes aren't going to pile up. For four guys, eight of everything, but you don't want miss-matched stuff."
In a guy's apartment, each roommate needs a role to control the masses of guests.
"We're going to need one that just attacks," Weinheimer said. "He's outgoing, the life of the party, plays an offensive game and flirts with girls. We'll need one who just knows all the people and what's going down. We'll need one who is crazy; he'll have great ideas all the time. We're going to need some hook-ups; we'll need a kid with some money."
Weinheimer said each guy in the apartment will want to keep the bathroom dry to avoid mold. He said a fluffy shower mat isn't going to dry out so quickly. He also said with four guys showering in one place, ideally everyone would have his own towel hook, counter space and drawer for toiletries.
"Four hooks, four towels, and color coordinated," Weinheimer said. "There's red for one guy, blue for another. It doesn't matter if you have a zebra towel as long as everyone knows that the zebra towel is for homeboy."
